"Highwayman" is a song written by American singer-songwriter Jimmy Webb, about a soul with incarnations in 4 unlike places in time and history: every bit a highwayman, a crewman, a structure worker on the Hoover Dam, and finally as a helm of a starship. The song was influenced past the real-life hanged highwayman Jonathan Wild. The dam architect poesy alludes to the deaths of over 1 hundred men during the construction of Hoover Dam near Bedrock Metropolis, Nevada, although none of those deaths resulted in a person being encased in concrete. Webb first recorded the song on his anthology El Mirage, released in May 1977. The post-obit year, Glen Campbell recorded his version, which was released on his 1979 album Highwayman. In 1985, the vocal became the inspiration for the naming of the supergroup the Highwaymen, which featured Johnny Greenbacks, Waylon Jennings, Willie Nelson, and Kris Kristofferson. Their beginning album, Highwayman, became a number i platinum-selling anthology, and their version of the song went to number one on the Hot Land Songs Billboard nautical chart in a twenty week run. Their version earned Webb a Grammy Honor for All-time Land Song in 1986. The vocal has since been recorded by other artists.
