"With You I'm Born Over again" is a 1979 duet written by Carol Connors and David Shire that originated on the soundtrack of the 1979 motion moving-picture show Fast Break. It was performed by Motown recording artists Baton Preston and Syreeta Wright (credited as Syreeta) and became an international hit for the duo, reaching number four on the Billboard Hot 100[2] and number two on the Great britain singles chart.[iii]

The music from Fast Break was credited to David Shire and James DiPasquale, and Ballad Connors put words to four of the songs on the soundtrack anthology. Connors recalls, "I had written most of the lyrics to 'With Yous I'm Born Again' in 22 minutes, but I couldn't discover two words and it was driving me crazy."[4] The right words came to her on her way to an ice cream parlor, where she requested a pencil and paper forth with her order. "I had finally found it—the line I was seeking--'Come show me your kindness, in your artillery I know I'll find this'—and I wanted to get it down on paper."[iv]
Motown executive Suzanne de Passe chose Wright as Preston's partner for the ii duets that had been written for the moving-picture show,[5] and each vocalist likewise had a solo number to cut for the soundtrack album besides. Connors recalled, "Baton and Syreeta were originally non very fond of the idea of recording together—they each wanted to do their ain thing, just this worked out extremely well for both of them."[4] The reluctant pair were surprised by the success of "With You I'yard Built-in Again". Connors noted the impression some were left with by the vocal and Preston. "When David Shire heard Baton Preston play the song on the organ, he said to me, 'At present I know why he'south a star.'" Connors also shared, "The tardily great Marvin Hamlisch told me that he was in the hairdresser chair when he first heard the song on the radio and stood straight up in amazement, narrowly missing getting his throat cutting by the scissors. Simply radio airplay and record sales almost never happened. The Fast Break soundtrack was released in early on 1979, when disco yet permeated the airwaves, and the other of the duo's recordings from the anthology, the dance melody "Go for It", was chosen equally the single that would be issued to promote the album. That selection barely made a dent in the charts, spending 1 calendar week on the Disco singles chart at number 80 in Billboard mag[7] and "bubbling under" the Billboard Hot 100 for one calendar week at number 108.[2]
The film did not get much attending, either, and Preston described their next attempt to give "With You I'm Born Again" more exposure, explaining that "subsequently the picture show didn't do very well, the [soundtrack] album didn't sell well. We pulled information technology off that anthology and put it on mine."[6] Preston's album, Late at Nighttime, came out later on in 1979, but even with that reissue of the vocal, Preston insisted that "we all the same didn't call up of it as a single."[half dozen] It did, however, brainstorm to get airplay in the European market place[vi] and was finally released as a single at the cease of the year.
Another hurdle the song had to overcome was the fact that its championship did not click with some record buyers. Culp was the inspiration."[4] The singers also felt the song could be interpreted in a religious context as well every bit being a romantic love song. "With You I'm Built-in Again" debuted on the Billboard Hot 100 in the issue of the mag dated December 8, 1979, and peaked at number four over the course of 29 weeks.[2] The post-obit week marked its first appearance on the Great britain singles chart[8] and on Billboard'due south list of the 50 most popular Adult Contemporary songs in the U.Southward., and both nautical chart runs resulted in a number two showing.[nine] [3] Information technology besides started three weeks on the magazine's Hot Soul Singles chart in the Jan xix, 1980, issue and got every bit loftier as number 86.[10] It was Preston's biggest hit in v years and the biggest pop hitting of Wright's career.
